Katie and her friend Cedar have birthdays close to each other, so they spent months planning a combined birthday party. They decided on a Japanese theme, so I started googling for ideas and found this really cute "mock sushi" idea on Family Fun. It seemed pretty simple and people rated it an easy project so I figured I could handle it. Ha! You start out by making rice crispie treats, then put gummy worms on top and roll it like a cinnamon roll. Then you cut the pieces and put a fruit leather around them. So my first problem was that my rice crispie treats would NOT roll, so I ended up just smashing the stuff into a little circle. Second, I should have been smart and bought that "fruit by the foot" stuff, but instead I bought fruit roll ups, which I had to cut up. I thought I bought just plain red, but of course they had those tongue tattoo things printed on them, so the little "sushis' said stuff like "boo-yah" and "ka-ching" on them. Nice. The girls ate them anyway, and one of them even complimented my cute Christmas serving platter (the only one I own). I made just enough sushis for the girls to have one, then smooshed all the rest of it into a big rice crispie treat/gummy worm ball. I guess to be a "Martha Mom" you have to have talent & perfectionism but I'm a little lacking in both! The lucky thing is that I don't think kids really care!

The girls ate chicken and veggies and ramen noodles with chopsticks. We had strawberry cake (Cedar's choice) and brownies (Katie's choice). After dinner they had a great time doing karaoke (what japanese party would be complete without karaoke?!!) I'm thankful Katie has such a great group of friends!
