A month or so after we moved into 4th ward, I was asked to be a counselor in the Primary. Not long after, our Bishop called Sister Laverne Slade to be a Primary teacher. Now I am not sure how old Sister Slade is, but I know she is at that age where women usually don't want to go anywhere NEAR Primary. Lucky for me, she accepted the call. She was DJ's Primary teacher during a really difficult time, and she was so loving to him. Her lessons were so well prepared every Sunday
. Each week she gave the kids a little bag with a treat or a pencil and a little handout that she made on a typewriter (meaning she typed up about eight individual handouts- making me really thankful for computers!). Her love and time and effort was a really special thing to see and really made an impact on the children in her class.
One of the sweet things Rusty's mom used to do was make me a little cake on my birthday. My first birthday after she passed away made me a little sad, kind of the same way I still wish- 12 years later- for a birthday phone call from my Grandma Elmer. Low and behold, who comes to my house with a little cake and the nicest card- Sister Slade.
Last January Sister Slade was released from Primary. She had put in a really good year and was ready for a change. I don't get to see her much anymore, so imagine my surprise when a few weeks ago she comes to my house the night before my birthday with this wonderful cake. (The missing spot of frosting is courtesy of one of my children!)
Little acts of kindness like that mean so much. I thought of her during Elder Holland's talk about angels, because she truly is an angel to me. She has helped patch up a little hole that came into my life when Yvonne died. She has been so kind and encouraging to me, just the way Yvonne and my grandma were. I hope someday when I am her age, I will still want to be in Primary and work so hard to share the beauty of the gospel with children. She is a great example to me of Christlike love and kindness, and I hope I can follow her example!
Because I spend a few days a week as a teacher, I am going to give HOMEWORK! Share in my comments or on your own blog about an act of kindness that really meant something to you. Love really is what it's all about.

First you and Stacy, for being the most awesome visiting teacher's and never making me feel like an "assighnment". lol. I love our visit's..or I should say I love you both for listening to me ramble on for hour's..hehehe. xoxo
and the other morning, Marci (Haw's) called my house to let me know the bus was running late and they would be there shortly to pick up my girls. They are at a different bus stop than her girls are, so she just didn't want me to worry.
I'm so lucky to know this special Lady, she has alway's been such a dear and special friend to me. Thank You Marci, from the bottom of my heart for being my friend and neighbor! xoxoxo Erin
